Bipartite patella

A anterior posterior radiograph of the knee demonstrate bipartite patella (two-part patella)
It is a patella with an unfused accessory ossification center at the superolateral aspect. 
Bipartite patella is usually discovered as incidental finding in asymptomatic patients but 2%of patients it is symptomatic. It present as anterior knee pain.
One method of classification according to H Saupe is as:
  • type I: inferior pole ~1%
  • type II: lateral margin ~20-25%
  • type III: superolateral portion ~75%
